What is CNC Machine Fire Suppression?

Automated machines such as CNC machines are often left unattended to operate for long periods or even to run throughout the night. If there was a fault, a safety cut out would probably stop the machine running, but what would happen if a fire broke out whilst it was unattended? This means that a fire can quickly be detected without the use of conventional electronic detectors, therefor removing the need for any independent power supply or battery back-up but more importantly it means the system is utterly reliable as there are minimal components.
A simple explanation of how Automatic Fire Suppression Systems work is that the detection tubes are filled with nitrogen to the correct pressure which will hold the extinguisher valves in the closed position. If a fire breaks out the temperature will increase, this causes the nitrogen to expand and the pipe to burst, allowing the extinguisher valve to open.
As CNC Machines are used for a range of applications, FET can provide you with the correct type of extinguishant to suit your set-up. In addition to this, the Automatic Fire Suppression System can easily be integrated to work in conjunction with the machines own emergency stop circuit, alarm or extraction system. So for example, if the tube burst through fire, or there was a loss of nitrogen, reducing the pressure, an additional switch connected to the nitrogen filled tube would be triggered, causing the machine to automatically stop.

Automatic Fire Suppression Systems rely on a change in pressure from a heat source in order to trigger the extinguishant. Rather than having a separate power supply or battery back-up with complex digital detectors, the pneumatic system has very few moving parts, making the system very simple and therefor extremely reliable. We can also supply a range of on-conductive extinguishants depending upon your application needs – these extinguishants are especially designed to not damage electrical items or components and they do not leave any residue.
Fire Engineering Technology systems install the detection tubing throughout the enclosure, or where ever it is required, this is then connected to the cylinder valve. The tubing is filled with nitrogen to a specified pressure, it is this pressure that holds the extinguishant in the cylinder. If there is a change in temperate, such as a fire, the pressurised tubing will expand and burst resulting in the extinguishant being dispensed directly from the burst section in the tube onto the fire.
Although this technology is simple, it is extremely effective as it means the fire created a discharge nozzle by breaking the tube so it is always exactly in the right location to extinguish the fire.
An additional switch is also added to the system and is held closed by the pressure of the nitrogen in the tube. If the tubing were to burst or a sudden drop in pressure in the tube, the switch will open which sends a signal to isolate the power and raise an alarm.
Our Automatic Fire Suppression Systems are also ideal for server racks or server rooms and can easily be fitted to the existing equipment. The system can be set up to protect individual racks in cupboards or remote locations, or scaled up for use in Data centres with multiple racks being protected by one common cylinder. What is Fume Cupboard Fire Suppression?
In most laboratories there is a high risk of fire breaking out and one area of particular risk, due to the nature of heat rising, are fume hoods and cupboards. It’s within these areas you can usually find ignition sources, for example volatile chemicals, Bunsen burners etc which pose a particular danger to fire starting and spreading.
Typically fume hoods and cupboards would be covered by a traditional fire alarm system and connected to sprinklers. Whilst a sprinkler system is usually effective at containing a fire, it can cause extensive water damage to the building or in the case of chemical related fires, actually spread the fire.
In addition to this, often when a fire breaks out in a fume hood or cupboard, the heat and the fire follow the air out of the extraction exhaust which can cause the fire to spread rapidly, which in turn may delay the sprinklers from activating.

This removes the need for separate power supplies or battery backups and also makes the entire system fail safe as there are very few moving parts. All of our systems are hassle free to install and can be fitted in a timely efficient manner. Our system uses a patented linear detection tube which is installed around the engine bay and connected to the cylinder valve. The tubing is then filled with nitrogen or compressed air and this pressure is measured precisely to so that the extinguishant does not flow out of the cylinder.
Should a high temperature or fire occur then the pressurized tubing will burst and the extinguishant will flow directly from the burst hole and extinguish the fire. Because the extinguishant flows out the hole created, this effectively becomes a discharge nozzle, meaning the fire is hit at the precise place it has occurred. There is an optional switch that can also be added to the system and again, this is held closed by the pressure in the tube. If the tube bursts or the pressure be lost for any reason, the switch will open and this signal can be used to isolate the engine.
The direct low pressure (DLP) system utilizes Fire Detection Tubing as both the fire detection device and the fire suppression delivery system, The portion of the tube nearest the hottest point of the fire ruptures forming an effective discharge "Nozzle". The pressure drop in the tube release the entire contents of the cylinder through this nozzle.

Broadly speaking, there are two methods for applying an extinguishing agent: total flooding and local application:
Systems working on a total flooding principle apply an extinguishing agent to a three dimensional enclosed space in order to achieve a concentration of the agent (volume percent of the agent in air) adequate to extinguish the fire. These types of systems may be operated automatically by detection and related controls or manually by the operation of a system actuator.
Systems working on a local application principle apply an extinguishing agent directly onto a fire (usually a two dimensional area), or into the three dimensional region immediately surrounding the substance or object on fire. The main difference in local application from total flooding design is the absence of physical barriers enclosing the fire space.
In the context of automatic extinguishing systems, local application generally refers to the use of systems that have been emplaced some time prior to their usage rather than the use of manually operated wheeled or portable fire extinguishers, although the nature of the agent delivery is similar and many automatic systems may also be activated manually. The lines are blurred somewhat with portable automatic extinguishing systems, although these are not common.
