CLEAN AGENT GASES

TUBE BASED SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

NOVEC 1230 OR FK-5-1-12 GAS

WET CHEMICAL OR K-TYPE AGENT

NOVEC 1230 OR FK-5-1-12 GAS

Novec 1230 and FK-5-1-12 refer to the same clean fire suppression agent.

✅ What is Novec 1230 / FK-5-1-12?

  • Chemical name: Dodecafluoro-2-methylpentan-3-one

  • Trade name: Novec™ 1230 (by 3M), also known generically as FK-5-1-12

  • Formula: C₆F₁₂O

After 3M discontinued Novec 1230 production (announced in 2022, with wind-down by 2025), other manufacturers now market FK-5-1-12 under different names, but the chemical and performance remain identical.

Key Features of FK-5-1-12 (Novec 1230):

Feature Benefit     Clean agent Leaves no residue, safe for electronics   Non-conductive Safe for electrical and electronic equipment   Fast acting Extinguishes fires in seconds   Low toxicity Safe for occupied areas (people can be present)   Environmentally friendly Very low GWP (~1), short atmospheric lifetime (~5 days)   Non-ozone depleting Safe for ozone layer   Stored as liquid, discharged as gas Efficient storage and distribution.

 Applications of Novec 1230 / FK-5-1-12:

1. Data Centers & Server Rooms

  • Protects servers, switches, routers

  • Avoids water damage from sprinklers

2. Telecom & Network Closets

  • Ideal for 19” smart racks and distributed IT sites

3. Control Panels & Electrical Cabinets

  • Tube-based systems for localized suppression

4. Archives & Museums

  • Protects sensitive documents, artwork, and equipment

5. Medical Equipment Rooms

  • MRI, CT, and laboratory machines that must avoid dust or residue

6. Marine & Aviation

  • Used in engine rooms, electronics bays (FAA & IMO compliant)

7. EV Battery Compartments

  • Emerging use in electric vehicles (EVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS)

📦 Storage & System Types:

  • Stored in cylinders as a liquid, pressurized with nitrogen

  • Discharged as a gas, flooding the protected area rapidly

  • Can be deployed through:

    • Total flooding systems

    • Tube-based localized suppression

    • Modular systems for racks or enclosures

FM 200 OR HFC227EA GAS

WET CHEMICAL OR K-TYPE AGENT

NOVEC 1230 OR FK-5-1-12 GAS

FM-200 / HFC-227ea: What It Is & Where It’s Used

FM-200 is the trade name for the clean fire suppression agent HFC-227ea (heptafluoropropane), widely used in mission-critical environments where clean, fast, and non-damaging fire protection is essential.

🔥 How FM-200 Works

  • Discharged within 10 seconds to flood the protected space.

  • Extinguishes fire via heat absorption and chemical interruption of the combustion process.

  • Requires airtight enclosure for total flooding systems.

  • Safe for occupied spaces when properly designed.

 Applications of FM-200 (HFC-227ea):

Industry / Sector Use Case     Data Centers Server rooms, IT cabinets   Telecommunications Switch rooms, base stations   Archives & Libraries Rare books, documents, tapes, media vaults   Medical Facilities MRI and imaging equipment rooms   Oil & Gas Control rooms, MCCs, substations   Marine / Ships Engine rooms, electronics bays   Power Generation Electrical control rooms, substations   Military / Defense Radar rooms, control systems, sensitive equipment .

🧯 System Types:

  1. Total Flooding Systems
    • FM-200 is discharged to fill an entire room (e.g., server room, control room).

  1. Enclosure-Based (Local)
    • For cabinets, racks, or vehicles, FM-200 can be used in modular or tube-based systems.

  1. Tube-Based Systems
    • Detection tube ruptures at high temperature → triggers FM-200 release at the fire origin (e.g., inside electrical panels or engine bays).

 Advantages vs Disadvantages :

✅ Pros ⚠️ Cons     Clean – no residue High GWP (subject to regulation)   Fast suppression (<10 seconds) Airtight room & regular maintenance required   Safe for electronics & data Storage cylinders need space   Safe for occupied areas (if properly designed) Costly compared to CO₂ or powder systems   Proven track record globally Not ideal for very large open areas.

🔒 Compliance and Standards

FM-200 systems comply with:

  • NFPA 2001 (Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems)

  • ISO 14520

  • UL & FM Approvals

WET CHEMICAL BASED KITCHEN SUPPRESSION SYSTEM

WET CHEMICAL OR K-TYPE AGENT

WET CHEMICAL OR K-TYPE AGENT

WET CHEMICAL OR K-TYPE AGENT

✅ Wet Chemical (K-Type) Fire Suppression Agents: What They Are & How They're Used

Wet Chemical agents—commonly referred to as Class K agents—are specialized firefighting chemicals designed to suppress kitchen and cooking oil fires. They are essential for commercial kitchens, restaurants, food trucks, and any area where deep fat fryers or grease-heavy appliances are used.

🔬 What Is a Wet Chemical / Class K Agent?

  • Composition: Typically a potassium-based solution, such as:

    • Potassium acetate

    • Potassium carbonate

    • Potassium citrate

  • Appearance: Clear or slightly yellowish liquid, stored under pressure.

  • Discharge: Forms a fine mist spray that cools the surface and suppresses vapors.

🔥 How It Works (Saponification):

  1. Rapid Cooling:

    • The wet chemical absorbs heat, cooling the burning oil below its ignition point.

  1. Saponification (unique to K-type agents):

    • Reacts with hot oils and fats to form a soapy foam layer.

    • This foam smothers the fire and prevents reignition by sealing off oxygen and vapors.

  Ideal Applications for K-Type Agents:

Environment Fire Hazard Protected     Commercial kitchens Deep fat fryers, flat-top grills, woks   Restaurants and cafés Open flame and oil-based cooking   Food trucks / kiosks Compact areas with high fire risk   Hotels & institutions Industrial fryers and ovens   Marine kitchens Galley fire protection .

🔒 Compliance & Standards:

  • NFPA 17A: Wet chemical fire suppression systems

  • UL 300: Standard for testing of kitchen suppression systems

  • NFPA 96: Ventilation and fire protection of commercial cooking operations
